Event Details

You are invited to attend an ‘extended experience’ of Strange Case, a new piece directed by Sally Cookson and devised by the company at Bristol Old Vic.

Strange Case

"When Henry Jekyll dresses each morning, buttons are done up, dress-coat is brushed down, cravat is neatly tied and polished boots are laced. The erudite Doctor is a picture of Victorian respectability and restraint.

But why is he racked with guilt and consumed with a morbid sense of shame?

In response to the novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, Strange Case explores the idea of human duality using whatever is necessary to do so. Movement, song, spoken word, dance, music and visual imagery combine to create this innovative work in progress."

This experimental screening is part of a research project which seeks to capture and extend the experience of watching live theatre to the digital realm. Working in collaboration with filmmaker Geoff Taylor, this screen-based experience was created using footage captured from a one-off live performance that took place at Bristol Old Vic last week. The performance incorporated a range of fixed and wearable cameras recording the point of view of the actors, musicians, back stage and props.

Screenings take place at Watershed on Saturday 30 May between 10am and 2pm, and are approximately 30 minutes long.

If you can’t make the screening you can still take part. We are inviting those who are unable attend, to participate in the experience via a complimentary USB stick for home-viewing.

Sign up to participate in this cutting-edge research project by selecting the appropriate option above.

Drinks and snacks will be provided after each screening. This project is funded by the Technology Strategy Board and is a collaboration between Bristol Old Vic, Watershed and HP Labs.

Best wishes
Victoria
